Latvian minister invites annulling Ventspils ex-mayor’s honorary status in LU

Latvian Minister of Education and Science Anita Muižniece has sent an invitation to the University of Latvia to annul ex-mayor of Ventspils Aivars Lembergs’ status of honorary member of the University of Latvia.
«Following complaints from law enforcement institutions and criminal procedures commenced for Aivars Lembergs, I have sent a request to annul his honorary University of Latvia member status, which was provided to him in 1998,» the minister wrote on Twitter.
BNN previously reported that the chairman of the Senate of the University of Latvia Kristaps Jaudzems did previously submit a request to annul Lembergs’ honorary status, but it was not supported.
Jaudzems wrote on Twitter that it is because of this reason he decided to submit a request to relieve him of duties as chairman of the university’s senate.
14 senators voted in favour, four voted against and 19 – abstained in the vote, as reported by Latvijas Avīze.
Former Saeima deputy Lolita Čigāne comments that in this case «the inability to stand on the side of truth and justice is a shameful display by the University of Latvia».
