NATO forces are not theoretical or on paper – NATO troops are already in Latvia, and their numbers keep increasing, said Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Krišjānis Kariņš during the annual foreign policy debates in the Saeima.
Kariņš said that under Canada’s leadership, NATO forces from almost ten countries proved they can operate as a single combat unit. At the same time, Denmark and USA have both sent their forces to Latvia. US forces are stationed in Latvia on a permanent basis, said the minister.
Canadian forces stationed in Latvia will gradually grow to the size of a brigade. Tanks, artillery and the number of Canadian troops continue increasing in Latvia, Kariņš confirmed.
The politician confirmed that during the NATO summit in Vilnius in 2023 there were new defence plans adopted. These plans determine how the alliance will go about aiding other NATO member states if such a necessity arises. They also determine how NATO forces will be deployed, and how support will come to Latvia if the country needs it.
The minister said Latvia invests into its own security. Soon Latvia will have its own anti-air defence and additional artillery. The number of active reservists continues going up as well, and Latvia continues investing into its military infrastructure.
