Latvian government to pay compensation to surviving family members of woman stabbed in Jekabpils

The Ministry of Justice has submitted to the government a proposal to pay the children and mother of the woman tragically stabbed dead by her ex husband in Jekabpils a compensation of EUR 50 000.
It is planned for the money to be paid from the budget for emergencies. The compensation will not be subject to personal income tax.

The document is currently under review by the Ministry of Finance.

Previously it was reported that President Edgars Rinkēvičs sent a letter to Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš with an invitation for the Cabinet of Ministers to pay a single-time compensation of at least EUR 50 000 to the surviving children of the woman that was tragically stabbed dead in Jekabpils earlier this year.
On the 16th of April a 1983-born woman was stabbed to death in front of her child and mother in Jekabpils. The murder was committed by the woman’s ex-husband Leons Rusiņš. For months before the murder he had been harassing the woman. This behaviour was reported to the police, but no protection was provided in the end.

Rusiņš was already involved in 19 separate criminal processes. 18 of them were for refusing to comply with court-mandated restrictions.

Police have yet to find Rusiņš. It is not impossible he may have committed suicide, however.
