This week the Cabinet of Ministers reviewed the report On the Improvement of State Cyber Security Management, supporting the creation of a National Cyber Security Centre next year.
The goal behind the creation of this centre is improvement of cyber security management to help solve challenges like varied cyber security levels in state and municipal institutions and secure qualified personnel and pay them competitive wages, as well as introduce cyber security functions as listed in EU legislative acts.
The centre’s functions will include development of Latvia’s cyber security, coordination and monitoring of the national cyber security policy, evaluation of IT develop projects’ security requirements, implementation of cyber security requirements listed in EU legislative acts, as well as resolution of cyber security-related incidents and promotion of awareness of society’s understanding of cyber security.
The National Cyber Security Centre will be subordinated to the state secretary to the Ministry of Defence and will combine cyber security policy’s coordination and monitoring,
as well as prevention of cyber security incidents.
The centre will be composed of officials from the Ministry of Defence and CERT.LV. Additional personnel will be attracted as well.
In relation to the creation of a National Cyber Security Centre and other solutions identified in the ministry’s report, it is planned to submit major amendments to legislative acts, including Information Technology Security Law, as well as multiple rules of the Cabinet of Ministers and other regulations.
