Latvian government promises to pay medical workers more next year

On Tuesday, the 19th of December, the Latvian government passed Cabinet of Ministers regulations on the lowest monthly salary for medical practitioners. It is planned to divert EUR 71.33 million towards this in 2024 and in future years.
As reported by the Ministry of Health, the lowest monthly wage will be increased for medical workers, including hospital staff, Emergency Medical Service, National Blood Donors Centre, National Forensic Examination Centre and medical workers in other institutions that provide state-funded services.
The lowest pay for medical workers is determined by Cabinet of Ministers regulations on the lowest monthly salary and special allowance for health care workers. Thus, for example, for certified doctors and functional specialists, the lowest monthly wage will be EUR 1 813 from the 1st of January 2024 onward, which is an increase of 10.6% or EUR 174; for certified nurses and medical assistants it will be EUR 1 189, which is an increase of 6.5% or EUR 73; for medical support persons, the lowest monthly salary will increase by 6.9% or EUR 56.

There are six job categories in this sector.

To resolve the human resource shortage issue, one of the most important factors is the continued growth of wages for medical workers, which remains a priority, adds the Ministry of Health.
