Latvian government awards hockey team a double cash prize for bronze

For making it to the third place in the World Ice Hockey Championship 2023, Latvia’s national ice hockey team and Latvian Ice Hockey Federation (LHF) will receive a prize amount of EUR 576 717. This amount much larger than what was planned initially.
In accordance with the Sports Law, for the third place in the ice hockey championship Latvia’s men’s hockey team was eligible for a prize of EUR 102 447. LHF is eligible for EUR 106 716 to continue developing this sport.
At the same time, the Ministry of Education and Science believes

winning bronze in the history of Latvian sports is unique, which is why such an accomplishment should be rewarded on the highest executive level.

This is why Latvian ice hockey team members, their coaches and support staff are planned to be paid EUR 220 000 for third place in the World Ice Hockey Championship. The federation is eligible to receive EUR 356 717. Money is planned to be taken from the state budget programme for emergencies.
On the 28th of May Latvia’s team won third place in the World Ice Hockey Championship 2023. Latvia won against US with a score of 4:3. For Latvia this championship was the most successful in history.
