Latvian doctor receives reprimand for not letting husband see his wife before she died

The Health Inspectorate has issued a reprimand to Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS) for violating the Law on the Rights of Patients in March, when the hospital refused to let a husband visit his dying wife in intensive care, as LETA was told by the Health Inspectorate’s senior public relations specialist Iveta Balode.
She explained that during the inspection the head of the intensive care ward and practising doctor. The inspectorate also met with and interviewed the person who was prohibited from meeting with the patient.
A reprimand was issued to the hospital for violating the Law on the Rights of Patients. If the hospital commits the same offence again, the hospital and the doctor will be applied with an administrative penalty.
In March LTV programme Panorāma reported that an internal inspection commenced in the hospital over doctor’s actions in not letting the man see his dying wife.
The hospital’s representatives said not letting people see patients “is not employed practice”, rather an unfortunate coincidence.
RAKUS representatives are reluctant to comment the ongoing internal investigation.
