The State Revenue Service (VID) has commenced an inspection of Daugavpils Mayor Andrejs Elksniņš’s as a private person’s expenses and their compliance with official income, as VID manager Baiba Šmite-Roķe said in an interview to LTV programme “Viens pret vienu” [One on one].
Previously VID reported that the check of Elksniņš’s state official’s income declaration for 2021 and 2022 revealed only small and insignificant violations. This is why the previously initiated administrative violation procedure was terminated. All Elksniņš got was a reprimand.
Šmite-Roķe told LTV that VID will continue evaluating Elksniņš as a private person’s income and expenses.
“This inspection still continues. Usually these inspections cover not only the intended person, but their family members as well,” said the head of VID.
At the same time, VID will not be able to publicly reveal results due to personal data protection. Šmite-Roķe added that Elksniņš can turn to VID with an application with consent for VID to share data analysis in this case.
At the same time, the head of VID also said that if need be the service may turn to law enforcement institutions – Tax and Customs Police or Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB).
The head of VID also said that last year nearly 600 people were checked in terms of their lifestyle meeting their legal income. Another 800 people had their bank account turnover checked for compliance with actual income.
After these checks, persons declared income worth more than EUR 1 million, and more than EUR 1 million was added to the state budget, the head of VID reports.
As previously reported, VID and KNAB performed an investigation based on a publication in a magazine that suggested how Elksniņš was supposedly living a life of luxury.
