Latvian National Armed Forces’ readiness is enough to face modern security threats, said Saeima National Security Committee’s chairman Jānis Dombrava in an interview to TV3.
The politician said Russia and its interests are behind PMC Wagner Group and Belarusian government’s activities. This is why Latvia carefully follows developments in the neighbouring country and considers concentration of military forces close to Latvia’s borders as new security risks.
The Saeima deputy said he does not see any reason for Latvia to take any new steps despite the appearance of Wagner in Belarus, even though
there are also risks of provocations for the Suwalki corridor.
He explained that Latvian military experts say the country’s armed forces’ readiness is sufficient to face modern security risks. Dombrava reminds that since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war significant strategic decisions have been made on a NATO and national level, increasing readiness to combat various security risks.
The head of the committee said as a result of the Russia’s initiated war
the number of so-called urapatriots, which are believed to be dangerous to Latvia’s national security, has gone down.
When asked what in Latvia is done to resolve the issue of shelters for the civil population in Latvia, Dombrava said civil protection in the country was neglected in the past, but the Ministry of the Interior promises to come up with solutions by autumn.
