Latvia to reopen two bomb shelters in Riga this year

This year it is planned to restore two bomb shelters in Riga, survey schools and assess underground tunnels, as confirmed by the Chief of Civil Protection and Operational Information Office Gints Reinsons at a press-conference on Wednesday, the 13th of March.
As part of Riga municipality’s Civil Protection Plan, two bomb shelters will be reopened and restored this year. State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) will cooperate with Civil Protection and Operational Information Office to survey school basements, assess and mark underground tunnels, said Reinsons.
Deputy chief of VUGD Ivars Nakurts stressed that bomb shelters planned to be restored are structures specifically built as shelters – buildings and infrastructure that is blast resistant. Basements will serve as temporary shelters to stay safe from blasts and shrapnel generated in explosions.
The Riga Civil Protection Plan is important at the national level, as it gives a landmark to other municipalities as well. It has been developed in collaboration with a wide range of experts, including the National Armed Forces (NBS) and the VUGD. An important addition to the plan is action in the event of a military threat, which will provide citizens with important information on how to significantly improve their security in emergency situations.
