After environment services were moved under the wing of the Ministry of Climate and Energy, the Ministry of Environment Protection and Regional Development (VARAM) could be renamed as the Ministry of Nature Protection and Regional Development (DARAM), said minister Inga Bērziņa in an interview to Latvijas Radio programme Krustpunktā.
The minister said this is just an idea, one which requires an agreement with coalition partners, preparation of appropriate documents and decision-making.
She said changes could be implemented following the distribution of functions between the two institutions in July.
As previously reported, after environmental services are moved from VARAM to the Ministry of Climate and Energy, the Environment Protection Office, Salaspils Botanical Garden and Museum of Natural History could remain under VARAM.
It is planned for VARAM to retain monitoring duties over nature, as well as education functions, municipalities and especially protected territories.
The minister stressed the section related to European Union funds is just as important. According to her, VARAM should remain the institution responsible for this field.
