From the 1st January 2024 onward, according to the Latvian government’s approved teachers’ pay rate rise schedule, it is planned to increase the minimal wage rate by 23% to EUR 1 526. This means the minimal wage rate of pre-school teachers will be equalised with the lowest monthly wage rate of other general education teachers.
This is provided by the amendments prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science and approved by the government on Tuesday, the 5th of December.
It is planned for the minimal rate of pre-school teachers’ wage to be increased from EUR 1 240 to EUR 1 526 a month for a 40-hour work week.
Equalisation of the minimal wage rate of pre-school teachers with other general education teachers will be done in accordance with the 29th June verdict of the Constitutional Court.
The necessary funding for this is included in expenditures of the Ministry of Education and Science for 2024-2026, as stated in the announcement from the Ministry of Education and Science.
To ensure an increase of up to EUR 9.54 for the lowest hourly rate for pre-school teachers starting with the 1st of January 2024, additional funding of EUR 16 328 984 has been allocated.
The government’s approved teachers’ pay increase schedule states that that from the 1st of January 2024 the lowest wage rate for teachers will reach EUR 1 526 per 40-hour work week, but in 2025 it will reach EUR 1 656.
The ministry has set the implementation of the pay rise schedule in pre-school, general and vocational education, as well as higher education and hobby education as one of the most important priorities in 2024. The funding planned for this is EUR 91.3 million.
The government plans to view amendments to the rules on the remuneration of teachers, which provide for the application of the minimum rate of remuneration of young teachers from the 1st of January 2024.
