Latvia plans to extend state of emergency on border with Belarus

On Wednesday, 30 November, Saeima’s Defence, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee decided to submit to the parliament a project that suggests extending the state of emergency on the Latvian-Belarusian border until the 10th of February 2023.
This project is planned to be discussed by the Saeima on 1 December.
The state of emergency was originally announced in August in response to the sharp climb of illegal border-crossing attempts on the Latvian-Belarusian border.

Changes provide for extending the state of emergency in Ludza, Kraslava and Augšdaugava, as well as Daugavpils until 10 February 2023.

During the meeting participants listened to the report from representatives of the Ministry for the Interior and State Border Guard on the situation on the border, as well as the progress with construction of border infrastructure.
