Latvia disposes of 2.1 million Covid-19 vaccine doses due to expiration

Latvia has so far been forced to dispose of 2.1 million Covid-19 vaccine doses due to them reaching their expiration date, as LETA was told by Latvian National Health Service (NVD).
Between 2020 and December 2023 Latvia has received 9.4 million vaccine doses.
The Ministry of Health reports that during this period of time Latvia has donated 2.5 million doses to third countries.
Currently Covid-19 vaccination in Latvia is done using Nuvaxovid and Comirnaty vaccines. There are 750 400 Covid-19 vaccines available to use, as their expiration is in 2024 and 2025, as reported by the Disease Prevention and Control Centre.
According to the contracts signed between the European Commission and vaccine manufacturers, sensitive information, including financial information – such as prices – is considered confidential and cannot be disclosed to third countries, NVD reports.
NVD stresses that termination of the contract or changes are possible if both sides agree with it and work on it together. EU member states have composed a joint vaccine procurement committee that negotiates with vaccine manufacturers on behalf of countries in order to secure the best possible conditions for all countries.
The last agreement on amendments was reached in May 2023. This agreement provides for reducing the volume of vaccines to be supplied to Latvia by 22%.
