According to the latest weather forecasts, this night a cyclone will approach Latvia from the south and bring lasting and extremely intensive rain to the country’s eastern territories. Rain is expected to be the most intense on Tuesday, 14 June. Since the soil is already moist, Latvian State Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre and State Fire and Rescue Service have declared a red level warning nation-wide.
Wide flooding is expected, which may create risks for people’s safety and may necessitate evacuation of residents. The expected weather will make movement difficult, Water, electricity and telecommunications disruptions are expected as well.
Driving conditions will be dangerous due to poor visibility and intense rain.
Water levels in nearby rivers and lakes are expected to increase considerably in the coming days. Flooding of lowest places and floodplains is also expected.

Large precipitation clouds passed through Latvia last weekend, bringing strong wind and very heavy rain. Rainfall was the strongest in eastern parts of Latvia. Precipitation volumes there were close to the norm for June, according to some meteorological observation stations.
