In the first two months of this year, 1 771 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is a 14.8% decrease or 308 fewer births compared to the same period in 2024, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Bureau.
Among the newborns registered in the first two months of 2025, 920 were boys, which is 14.1% (151) fewer than in the same period of 2024, while 851 were girls, down by 15.6% (157).
In February 2025, 890 babies were registered, which is 13.5% (139) fewer than in February 2024. This included 458 boys and 432 girls.
Thus, for the fifth consecutive month, the number of newborns registered in Latvia has remained below 1 000 per month. In October 2024, there were 994 births, in November – 940, December – 921, and in January 2025 – 881.
During the first two months of 2025, 4 533 deaths were registered in Latvia, which is 10.3% (519) fewer than during the same period in 2024, when there were 5,052 deaths.
This means that in the first two months of 2025, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 2 762, compared to 2 973 during the same period of the previous year.
In total, 933 marriages were registered in Latvia in the first two months of 2025, which is 38.4% (259) more than in the same period in 2024.
As of the 1st of March 2025, Latvia’s provisional population was 1.849 million.
