Once Ukraine has won Russia in the war, Latvia should honour Ukraine with a monument, said Latvian MEP Sandra Kalniete in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.
«Once Ukraine has won, I think Latvia and other Baltic States should honour Ukraine with a monument, because they will have defended Europe from the Russian threat,» lsm.lv cites Kalniete.
The monument in Victory park should be demolished, said Kalniete. Now is the time to do it, because most of Latvia’s society is in favour of this.
This monument has never been positively accepted in Latvia, but the Russian aggression in Ukraine has once again underlined Latvia’s scars left from WWII and after it.
This is why the decision by Saeima’s Foreign Affairs Committee to halt the section of the agreement between Latvia and Russia on preservation of memorials is welcome. It also requires support from the majority of Saeima, said Kalniete.
She also admitted that after reports of war crimes committed by Russian forces in Bucha and Kherson, democratic countries have become more unified in their stance on anti-Russian sanctions. Talks in the European Union about future anti-Russian sanctions are generally tough, because come countries, such as Hungary, may experience big problems from those sanctions.
Kalniete mentioned – every time when the issue of increased energy prices or other goods or services is mentioned, people should remember that they are alive, not hiding in cellars and not running from their homes, which is something that happened in WWII and is now happening in Ukraine because of Russia’s aggression.

BNN previously reported that more than two months have passed since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The war has forced a quarter of Ukraine’s 41 million residents from their home. Refugees flee to foreign countries, Latvia included. More than 5.1 million Ukrainians have already arrived in different countries.
The situation is dire for the residents of Mariupol trapped in the bunkers of Azovstal. According to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, hundreds of thousands of residents of occupied territories have been deported to Russia.
