Jelgava municipal council elects a new chairman

Former Ozolnieki County deputy Uldis Ainārs was elected as the new chairman of Jelgava County Council on Friday, the 20th of September.

He was the sole candidate for this post. Ainārs received support from 12 of his colleagues. One voted against. 13 out of 15 ballots were deemed valid.

Ainārs said his priority is breaking down borders to make sure residents of Jelgava and Ozolnieki counties start looking at each in a friendly manner.

The new chairman was elected on the day marked as the deadline for providing explanations to the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development (VARAM) on the failure to elect a new mayor for several months.

Until now, the deputy chairman of the county council, Irina Dolgova (S), was the acting mayor of the county, because the county had no head for months after Madars Lasmanis (LA) resigned on the 3rd of April.
