After signing Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s letter of resignation on Thursday, 21 July, Italy’s President Serio Mattarella signed the decree on the dissolution of the country’s parliament. This means snap elections may be organised soon.
Mattarella said he has decided to hold snap elections because the lack of support for Draghi indicates it’s not possible to compose a new government that would enjoy support from the majority of MPs.
«Dissolution of the parliament is always the last choice,» said the Italian President, adding that the political situation forced him to make this step.
The day of elections is not yet set, but Mattarella said that in accordance with Italy’s constitution, elections must happen within the next 70 days.
As previously reported, this Thursday Draghi submitted to the president his resignation. The president asked him to remain in his post as an interim prime minister.
According to surveys, the conservative bloc, which includes the national conservative party Fratelli d’Italia, will likely win in elections.
