The amount of the prize for the creators of the animated film “Flow” [Latvian title “Straume”], which received the Golden Globes, could be equated with awards for high-achievements in sports, the Minister of Culture Agnese Lāce (P) said in an interview with the LTV programme “Rīta panorāma”.
Without disclosing the specific amount offered for consideration by colleagues in the government, Agnese Lāce said that the Ministry of Culture has prepared its vision for the amount of the award, believing that it should be equivalent to that received by athletes for high achievements at the international level. “The Golden Globe is definitely a very high achievement in the industry, so our vision is in line with this scale, as it is not only an assessment of the film, but also an event to strengthen Latvia’s image,” said the politician.
She pointed out that the offer submitted by the Ministry of Culture included both an award and support for international marketing activities in order to continue the film’s journey around the world. It also provides support for educational activities and for the development and production of animated films in general. The ministry sees this as an opportunity to talk more about the development of the animation industry going forward.
Lāce promises that the amount of the cash prize will become publicly known in the coming days, once it has been discussed and agreed upon with colleagues.
In Latvia, cash prizes for high achievements in sports are determined by the rules on the procedure for awarding cash prizes for outstanding achievements in sports and the amount of cash prizes. Under these rules, the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games and the Deaf Games are considered the highest ranking competitions for which the state awards bonuses. For the first place in these races in individual sports can be awarded up to EUR 142 288, and in the case of team sports – up to EUR 426 862. Lower-forged medals are rewarded with cash prizes calculated in proportion to the first place award. In turn, for example, for winning the World Championship in individual discipline, an athlete can receive up to EUR 28 458, and a team – up to EUR 284 575.
The rules also provide for the possibility to allocate money for the development of a sport if its athlete or team showed high results at the Olympic Games, World Championships or European Championships.
The Latvian government is reportedly committed to financially rewarding the creators of the animated film “Stream” for winning the Golden Globe, Prime Minister Evika Silina (JV) said on Monday after a meeting of the ruling coalition.
The animated film “Flow” is a 3D-animated story about an individualist Cat who, during a major flood, is forced to leave his home and take refuge in a small boat with other animals. In order to survive in the new and uninhabited world of people, the Cat must change its habits and cooperate with the Dog, Capybara, Lemur and Bird.
The creative team of the film “Flow” includes director, producer, screenwriter and artist Zilbalodis, producer and co-author of the script Matīss Kaža, producers Rons Diānss and Gregorijs Zalkmans, sound director Gurvals Koiks-Gallass, chief animator Leo Silī-Pelisjē, music authors Zilbalodis and Rihards Zaļupe, visual effects artists Konstantīns Višņevskis and Mārtiņš Upītis.
