Institute of Agro-Resources and Economics compares prices among retailers in Baltic States

Among Baltic States goods sold in Rimi stores are the most expensive in Latvia. In Lithuania goods are the most expensive in Maxima stores, according to information compiled by the Institute of Agro-Resources and Economics (AREI) in June and July.
AREI provided Rimi network with a compilation on price differences in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia for 189 food products. These include necessities, sweets, salty snacks and exclusive goods, such as olives, nuts and avocado.

Among the analysed products are also ones under Rimi brand.

Of the 189 surveyed products in Latvia, 80 have prices in Rimi stores that are higher than prices in Lithuania and Estonia, whereas the prices of 58 products in Latvia are the lowest among Baltic States. Prices of 38 other products is on average level among Baltic States.
In Lithuania, however, Rimi stores sell 55 types of products for prices higher than prices in the other two Baltic states. The prices of 83 other Rimi stores in Lithuania are lower than prices in Latvia and Estonia.

Prices of 36 products in Rimi stores in Lithuania are on average level.

In Estonia Rimi stores sell 64 products for prices higher than in the other two Baltic States. Prices of 56 products are lower when compared with other Baltic States. Prices of 55 products in Rimi stores in Estonia are on an average level.

In Latvia 42.3% of chosen products sold in Rimi are more expensive when compared with Lithuania (29.1%) and Estonia (33.9%).

At the same time, prices are equal for three products in Rimi stores in Baltic States – Pacific skinless cod fillet; Rimi purified, boiled and frozen shrimp; Rimi Basic corn oil.
There are also cases when prices are high in two countries and low in the third. This accounts for Rimi brand sugar, for example, which costs EUR 1.35 in Latvia and Lithuania, and EUR 1.29 in Estonia. The same applies to Rimi pork ribs, which cost EUR 6.99 per 1 kg in Lithuania and Estonia, and EUR 5.39 per 1 kg in Latvia.

For Maxima AREI compiled information for 107 selected products.

Among them are also products under Maxima Favorit and Well Done brands.
In Latvia the price of 35 selected products sold in Maxima are more expensive than in Lithuania and Estonia. In Lithuania prices are higher for 46 products, and in Estonia prices are higher for 34 food products.

Prices are lower in Latvia for 52 selected food products. In Lithuania there are 32 cheaper products, whereas in Estonia the number of products sold at lower prices than in other two Baltic States is 35.

Prices are higher for 32.7% of selected products in Latvia. In Lithuania prices are higher for 43% of chosen products, whereas in Estonia prices are higher for 31.8% of chosen products.
Prices on an average level in Latvia for 18 products, 20 products in Lithuania and 19 in Estonia.
Seedless watermelons in Maxima stores cost the same in all three Baltic States.
Similarly to Rimi, there are cases observed for Maxima when prices in two countries are equally high. Yellow paprika in Latvia and Lithuania, for example, cost EUR 4.99 per 1 kg, whereas in Estonia is costs EUR 3.19 per 1 kg.
