Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Latvian Prosecutor’s Office has received 11 extradition requests from Russia, but not a single one has been satisfied, as LETA was told by the prosecutor’s office.
The prosecutor’s office did not comment on which country’s citizens Russia had asked to be extradited and whether those persons included opponents of the Kremlin regime.
One of the reasons why Latvia does not extradite persons is that Latvian authorities doubt Russia will guarantee their right to a fair trial.
At present, it cannot be said that cooperation between the Latvian and Russian prosecutor’s offices has stalled in fulfilling international requests, but it has become very limited and also more formal.
