Hired nannies’ and assistant teachers’ jobs may be at risk due to insufficient state language skills

Hired nannies and assistant teachers may be presented with restrictions if the State Language Centre (VVC) finds they have insufficient state language skills to perform their duties, according to the government’s action plan project.
Relevant restrictions are planned to be adopted by the 31st of August 2026.
Latvian Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša previously stressed multiple times that municipal education facilities should work with school principals to secure teachers that speak Latvian “not only on paper”.
She stressed that municipalities should survey the situation and use the available support mechanisms instead of waiting for an inspection and then start looking for a solution.
According to the minister, the transition to education only in Latvian language is a security matter, so there is no way back now.
