Harmony political party «condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine», but for «several reasons» the party considers the report in which Latvia is to declare Russia a state sponsoring terrorism «provocative».
For this reason the party will skip the vote in the Saeima, the party reported.
Russia’s «missile attacks on civilian targets and the atrocities committed against peaceful civilians are war crimes, and those that committed them, the ones who gave the orders and those who justify these crimes should be brought to justice,» Harmony’s statement mentions, mentioning that there is no justification for war.
Nevertheless, the party criticises the fact that the documents was composed under the lead by National Alliance representative, chairman of Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee Rihards Kols.
«We believe the state of war requires an especially scrupulous evaluation of each political step, including the announcement planned to be passed by the Saeima. Are there rational goals? Will it not expand the area of the conflict and further increase tension, which would be in the aggressor’s interest?» Harmony representatives explain their position.
The political party believes while some politicians voice solidarity with Ukrainian people, they also have a side-objective «to heat up their political ratings on the fire of war».
«Announcements containing radical but action-less offers serve as a decoy in a time when outrage at government’s inaction is on a rise among local residents, including the perplexing and contradictory communication from the Minister of Economics, who is a representative of the National Alliance, in a situation of a growing energy crisis,» Harmony representatives say.
Latvia remains dependent on supplies of Russian energy resources, which puts the country’s heating system to enormous risk, opposition party’s politicians say.
«Latvian society will have to pay a high price for this during this year’s heating season,» the party reported.
For a long time Harmony political party had a cooperation agreement with Russia’s ruling United Russia political party.
As previously reported, in a recent announcement Saeima’s Foreign Affairs Committee declared Russia’s violence against Ukraine’s and other countries’ civilians terrorism and the country – a state sponsoring terrorism.
The Saeima may vote on it next week.
