Gusty winds and cooler air: wintery weather expected in Latvia over the weekend

On Friday, the northwesterly and northerly winds will gradually strengthen and become gusty. As the stronger northern winds set in, cooler air will begin to flow into Latvia. While nighttime temperatures will drop to between 0 and +5°C, daytime highs will only reach +8 to +13°C, and in some coastal areas, temperatures may not rise above +6 to +7°C. The day will feature variable cloud cover and no precipitation, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

“We had previously informed that a thicker snow cover might develop in the eastern parts of the country over the weekend, but the likelihood of such weather conditions has significantly decreased. The latest data shows that the precipitation zone responsible for heavier snowfall will shift more towards the southeast on Sunday,” forecasters note.

ALTHOUGH HEAVY SNOWFALL IS UNLIKELY IN OUR REGION, SNOW AND WET SNOW ARE STILL EXPECTED IN MOST PARTS OF THE COUNTRY ON FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY.

In some areas, a 2–4cm snow cover may form, especially in the east, where it could persist for a few days due to temperatures fluctuating from above freezing during the day to below freezing at night.

These weather conditions will make roads particularly hazardous, as they will become icy at night and in the early morning. On Saturday, precipitation intensity will decrease and be mostly limited to the eastern part of the country. Moderate to moderately strong north and northwesterly winds are expected, with gusts reaching 15–19 m/s along the coast at night and further inland during the day. Nighttime temperatures will drop to between -1 and +3°C, while daytime highs will not exceed +5°C. The northerly wind will make it feel even colder.

On Sunday, the weather will slightly improve, and dry conditions are expected, though the wind will remain gusty. The night leading into Sunday will be significantly colder, with temperatures dropping to -1 to -6°C in many places. The day will not be much warmer, with maximum temperatures just slightly above freezing throughout the country.

Next week will also begin with cold and windy weather. During the first days of the week, intermittent precipitation is expected across most of the country – mainly rain in the west and mostly snow in the east. Nighttime temperatures will be below freezing almost everywhere, and only by midweek may daytime temperatures rise above +5°C in many areas.
