Discussions are underway regarding the selection of a candidate for the position of chairperson of the board of Ventspils Freeport. Representatives of entrepreneurs and the municipality have expressed the need to choose a candidate with relevant experience and knowledge in port management. Experts emphasize that this decision will impact port operations and the economic development of the region. It remains unclear whether the Ministry of Transport will consider the opinions of local stakeholders or make an independent decision.
The Ventspils municipality and businesses operating in the port hope that Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (JV) and Minister of Transport Atis Švinka (PRO) will listen to their concerns and appoint a suitable representative to lead Ventspils Freeport, possibly through an open competition.
Meanwhile, unofficial sources indicate that, despite objections from entrepreneurs, the Ventspils municipality, and the coalition partner party ZZS, the Ministry of Transport has nevertheless decided to re-nominate Inguna Strautmane for the position.
As BNN has learned, the Ventspils municipality points to Strautmane’s inability to assess the real situation and make decisions suitable for the port’s development. As a result, 1.5 million euros in ERDF funding has been lost, and the city has missed out on at least 30 new jobs. Additionally, the volume of attracted EU funds has decreased, important urban development projects have been stalled, and unnecessary legal disputes have continued.
The association representing port entrepreneurs, the “Ventspils Port Association,” has also approached Prime Minister Evika Siliņa and Minister of Transport Atis Švinka. The association urges the Ministry of Transport to consider qualifications and experience requirements necessary for the port board’s successful cooperation with businesses operating within the port. Unfortunately, Inguna Strautmane has demonstrated that she is incapable of fulfilling these requirements.
The association emphasizes that, among other responsibilities, the Ministry of Transport’s representative must work closely with port businesses to find solutions for overcoming the current crisis and fostering development. They must show interest in understanding the challenges faced by port entrepreneurs and assist in resolving them. Additionally, the representative should be committed to improving the business environment in the port and be able to communicate effectively and promptly with the municipality and its institutions.
