To halt the sharp decline in birth rates, a comprehensive plan will be introduced, but increasing social benefits next year would require approximately 150 million euros, with a minimum of 135 million euros, said the new Minister of Welfare, Reinis Uzulnieks (Union of Greens and Farmers), in an interview with Latvijas Radio programme “Labrīt”, as reported by public broadcaster LSM.LV.
Uzulnieks has already discussed this issue with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (New Unity), who acknowledged that 150 million euros is not available but stated that “several dozen” million euros could be allocated.
The minister noted that discussions about smaller amounts are possible, but the exact figures will be clearer in the autumn when state budget estimates are finalized.
At the same time, Uzulnieks emphasized that the government has no choice but to address the dire demographic situation. “The money must be found if we want to preserve the nation,” he added.
He also outlined the minimum necessary funding: increasing parental benefits from 171 to 420 euros, which would require about 70 million euros, funding for out-of-home care – 12 million euros, an increase in the family state benefits – 50 million euros.
“In total, the minimum required is 135 million euros. We will aim for the maximum (150 million euros), but if we secure 100 million euros, I will still be happy,” said Uzulnieks.
