From wet snow to severe frost – weather forecast for the week in Latvia

On Thursday, the 2nd of January, the sky in Latvia will be completely covered by clouds. During the day, snow will turn into wet snow and rain. 5-8 cm of snow will form in some areas, as reported by Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Roads will become icy. Visibility will suffer during snowfall, so motorists are advised to be cautious! Under cyclone activity, wind speed will be strong, reaching 15-19 m/sec in most of the country and up to 25 m/sec along the coast! Air temperature at night and day will stay within -1° C… +5° C. During the day, as colder masses of air flow to the country, air temperature will gradually go down.

Weather on Friday will be cloudy with moments of clear sky. It will snow every now and then. The layer of snow will increase by 5 – 7 cm in some areas. Roads will be slippery, and visibility will worsen during snowing! The wind will blow from the west and south-west, reaching a speed of 15-19 m/sec (20-22 m/sec along the coast).

Air temperature will gradually go down, dropping as far as -4° C in Vidzeme at night. Negative air temperature is expected in Latvia on Saturday. In north-eastern regions, air temperature will drop as far as -6° C… -10° C.

Current weather forecasts suggest cold air masses will remain above Latvia in the coming days. Residents are advised to dress in warmer clothes. Rain will be replaced by snow, making the ground white in many areas. In the first half of next week, although air temperature will stay at around 0° C at times, weather will remain cold.
