From threatening emails to foreign interference – what is Latvian police preparing for during the Saeima election? · BNN

Latvia’s State Police (VP) is seriously prepared for various possible provocations related to the upcoming 15th Saeima election, State Police Chief Armands Ruks said in an interview with Latvian Television’s programme Rīta panorāma.

He acknowledged that the risks during the election could vary widely – from individual incidents and reckless behaviour to organised attempts from abroad to influence Latvia’s domestic political processes.

As one possible risk, the police chief mentioned the sending of threatening emails.

Ruks said preparations for police work during the election began well in advance to ensure that the State Police can respond appropriately to various possible scenarios. At the same time,

he acknowledged that there are currently no clear indications of any specific threats.

The police chief said the service is currently operating under heightened readiness and will continue to do so until the election results have been counted, while continuously assessing the current situation.

He added that no significant incidents were recorded during the first four days in which voters were able to deposit their ballots for safekeeping.

As previously reported, today is the final day on which voters can deposit their ballots for safekeeping ahead of the 15th Saeima election, while the official election day is tomorrow.
