More than 50% of Ukrainians are critical of US President Donald Trump’s peace efforts, fearing that they are likely to lead to a partially or completely unjust end to Russia’s war in Ukraine, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) said on Tuesday, the 1st of April, according to Reuters.
Trump has promised a swift end to the war, but he has at times repeated the Kremlin’s position on the conflict, once accusing Kyiv of instigating it. He has also temporarily suspended military aid and intelligence exchanges with Ukraine.
KIIS said its conclusions were based on a survey of 1 326 people in Ukrainian-controlled territory between the 12th and 22nd of March.
It said that 32% of respondents expect a “rather unjust peace with the fulfilment of some Ukrainian demands”, while 22% expect a “completely unjust peace”.
Only 3% of respondents said they thought Trump could achieve a just peace, while 15% expect “a rather just peace, though with some concessions to Russia”.
These figures show that Ukrainians have become less optimistic about Trump’s aspirations since he took office in January.
In December, 20% of respondents said they expected a “rather unjust peace”, while 11% expected a completely unjust outcome, KIIS reported on its polls.
“Even before 2025, there was already some disappointment with US actions in Ukraine, and the Trump administration is quite decisively cementing the disapproval of the US,” KIIS Executive Director Anton Hrushetskyi said in a statement.
Separately, 67% of Ukrainians believe that the US is tired of Ukraine and is trying to force it to accept concessions, according to KIIS.
