The worldwide box office revenue of director Gints Zilbalodis’s award-winning animated film Flow reached 36 million US dollars (over 33 million euros) as of the 17th of March, according to information on the film industry platform Variety.
The Flow, which was created on a budget of 3.4 million US dollars (just over three million euros), has earned 4.6 million US dollars (4.5 million euros) in North America. The film premiered in North America in November, distributed by the joint team of Sideshow and Janus Films.
Zilbalodis’s animated feature has also seen success in other regions. For example, in Mexico Flow grossed approximately 6.7 million US dollars (around 6.1 million euros), and in Brazil – one million US dollars (roughly 920 000 euros).
In Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay combined, the film earned 3.4 million US dollars (approximately 3.12 million euros), while in Latvia the earnings were just under two million euros.
In France, Flow was watched by 68 217 viewers, generating around 5.4 million US dollars (about 4.96 million euros) in revenue. In Germany, the film earned one million US dollars during its opening weekend.
In the Netherlands, the animated film earned 1.3 million US dollars (about 1.19 million euros), in Spain – 1.6 million US dollars (around 1.47 million euros). In China, by its third weekend in theatres, the film had earned 2.7 million US dollars (approximately 2.4 million euros). In Vietnam, Flow made 591 000 US dollars (roughly 542 000 euros) after its opening weekend, during which 157 000 tickets were sold.
As previously reported, the European Film Academy awarded Zilbalodis’s Flow as the “Best European Feature-Length Animated Film,” while the film also won both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Animated Feature
Flow was also nominated for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards, making it only the second film in the award’s history to receive nominations in both categories – and the first ever non-dialogue film to win Best Animated Feature. So far, Flow has received over 70 awards across various countries and continents.
Flow premiered on the 22nd of May 2024, at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it became one of the audience’s and critics’ favourites.
The national premiere in Latvia took place on the 28th of August 2024, and in January of this year, Flow became the most-watched film of all time in Latvian cinemas.
The animated film Flow is a 3D animation telling the story of a solitary Cat who is forced to leave his home during a great flood and take refuge in a small boat with other animals. In order to survive in this new, humanless world, the Cat must adapt and learn to cooperate with a Dog, a Capybara, a Lemur, and a Bird.
The creative team behind Flow includes director, producer, writer, and artist Gints Zilbalodis; producer and co-writer Matīss Kaža; producers Ron Dyens and Gregory Zalcman; sound director Gurwal Coïc-Gallas; lead animator Léo Silly-Pellissier; composers Zilbalodis and Rihards Zaļupe; and visual effects artists Konstantīns Višņevskis and Mārtiņš Upītis.
