The US is reportedly planning to sanction representatives of the French justice system, and Paris court judge Peimane Ghaleh-Marzban has warned that such foreign interference is unacceptable, Politico reports.
The judge, addressing young magistrates, stressed that if such intentions are true and come to fruition, it would be an unacceptable and intolerable interference in France’s internal affairs. Ghaleh-Marzban presides over the court in Paris that is hearing the case of far-right politician Marine Le Pen.
Ghaleh-Marzban’s comments follow a report in German media Der Spiegel that the U.S. State Department is considering imposing sanctions on judges who decided to impose a five-year ban on Le Pen from running for office. The case involved the misuse of European Union funds, and the court’s decision also bars Le Pen from running in the 2027 French presidential election.
Le Pen’s, who denies any wrongdoing, appeal hearings will start in mid-January.
A ruling is expected by early summer.
US President Donald Trump has criticized the initial ruling, calling it another example of the European left using the law to curb free speech. The Trump administration recently pledged in its new National Security Strategy to support European patriotic parties that are trying to confront Europe’s “collapse of civilization.”
The US has imposed sanctions on 11 judges at the International Criminal Court in recent months, including a French judge who authorized the arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
