Freezing rain and wet snow expected on Monday – forecasters warn drivers

Monday will bring overcast skies across the country. During the night into Monday, rain is expected in some western areas, while in the east there will be wet snow, snow, and also freezing rain, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

As a result, roads in the eastern regions will be slippery. During the day, most of the country will see rainfall, while some eastern areas may again experience wet snow. A light to moderate southerly and southeasterly wind will blow. Overnight temperatures will drop to –1…+4°C, while daytime temperatures will rise to 0…+5°C, and along the coast up to +6…+7°C.

On Tuesday, rain is expected across most of the country, with wet snow in the east during the night, making certain road sections slippery. In the morning, fog will form in some eastern areas, reducing visibility. A light to moderate southerly and south-westerly wind is forecast, with gusts near the coast reaching up to 14 m/s.

Both at night and during the day, temperatures will remain similar — +3…+8°C

— except in the eastern part of the country, where nighttime temperatures will be cooler, around 0…+3°C.

During the night into Wednesday, light rain is expected in some areas, while during the day a broad precipitation zone will move in from the west, bringing widespread rain. A light to moderate south-westerly and southerly wind will prevail. Overnight temperatures will drop to +3…+7°C, while daytime temperatures will rise by a few degrees, reaching +5…+9°C.

In the second half of the week, both daytime and nighttime air temperatures will generally remain within +5…+8°C, though slightly cooler conditions may set in toward the weekend. On Thursday and during the night into Friday, precipitation is expected across almost the entire country, while coastal areas and all of Kurzeme can expect gusty winds.
