Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia (LBAS) stands in support of the picket organised by Latvian Trade Union of Education and Science Employees (LIZDA) on Thursday, 16 June, and fully joins the organisation’s demands, stresses LBAS.
The trade union sent a letter sent to Saeima speaker Ināra Mūrniece, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš, Minister of Education and Science Anita Muižniece, Minister of Finance Jānis Reirs, Saeima Education, Culture and Science Committee chairman Arvils Ašeradens.
The letter mentions that LIZDA is the biggest member of LBAS. For a long time it has not been able to reach an agreement with the Ministry of Education regarding efforts to balance teachers’ wages and workload. This is why on 1 June LIZDA Council decided to organize a picket outside the Saeima on 16 June.
LBAS supports LIZDA’s decision to organise a picket to voice justified demands to the Saeima and the government:
development of a work schedule for teachers and its approval for the next five-year period starting from 2023;
creation of a balanced workload for teachers;
for the government to take LIZDA’s proposals and objections into account in the development of the legislative draft On order under which state budget grants are calculated and applied for wages of teachers at municipal general education institutions to provide a transparent, reasonable and honest pay system for teachers.
LBAS believes teachers are an important resource to continue the education content reform and to provide a quality education process in the country. LBAS stresses that by strengthening the teacher’s support system, one of the most important and positive factors is that wages and workload will be balanced for teaching and academic personnel.
«Every LIZDA teacher employed in different education facilities has the right to receive honest pay for the work they do,» stresses LBAS.
