February in Latvia could be one of the coldest in recent years

Although brief thaws may occur at times in February, the month as a whole is expected to be several degrees colder than usual, according to forecasts.

Based on current data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, the first week of February in Latvia is expected to be around eight degrees colder than the norm. The second week could be about five degrees colder than the 1991–2020 average, while the second half of the month is forecast to be roughly two degrees cooler than usual. As a result, the average air temperature for the month is projected to be about four degrees below normal.

There will be very little precipitation at the beginning of the month, but the likelihood of precipitation will increase from 5 February onward. Not only snow is possible, but also freezing rain.

Periods of stronger winds and snowstorms may also occur.

During the first two nights of February, air temperatures in some places could drop to as low as –30 degrees Celsius. In the following days, the frost is expected to ease, but several new cold waves are possible later in the month.

Long-term forecasts often do not materialise. Seasonal forecasts published by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts in December indicated that January and February in Latvia and elsewhere in Europe would be warmer than normal.
