The recent thunderstorm and hail have shaken farmers greatly, according to the entry published by the Farmers’ Parliament on Facebook.
The association reports having received information about ruined corn and grain fields, downed trees, blocked roads, damaged buildings and machinery.
“We are surveying the situation will losses in order to plan out our future actions in regards to support for farms in trouble,” notes the Farmers’ Parliament.
The head of the Association for Sustainable Agriculture and the Rural Environment Valters Zelčs mentioned on Twitter that in 15 minutes the thunderstorm ruined absolutely everything, adding that the situation is extremely serious.
He adds that the association also has information about animals injured by hail. The Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) has yet to receive this information.
Previously it was reported that Latvia’s Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Environment Protection and Regional Development to compile information about damages caused by the recent thunderstorm, according to the PM’s post on social networks.
Kariņš also asked the two ministries to compile information about the necessary action from the government.
National Alliance member, chairman of Saeima’s National Security Committee Jānis Dombrava similarly mentioned in his post on Twitter that the thunderstorm brought enormous damages and that it is urgently necessary to host a meeting of the Crisis Management Council and provide support to residents whose property was damaged.
As previously reported, Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre announced a red level warning in the country’s western and central parts due to very dangerous thunderstorm and strong wind, large hail and intensive rain showers. The warning remained in force until 19:00 p.m. on Monday, the 7th of August.
