Explosion forces Oktoberfest celebrations to be suspended

After explosives were found in a residential building north of Munich, which ignited, the city’s Oktoberfest celebrations were suspended until at least 5 p.m. on the 1st of October, Reuters reports.
Special police forces are investigating a neighborhood north of Munich where explosions and gunshots were heard, according to Bild newspaper and other media outlets. Police said a house containing explosives was deliberately set on fire during a family dispute. One person has been found dead and one person is missing, but police believe the missing person is not in danger.

The special unit was called in to detonate booby traps found in the building.

Munich police said they were investigating various versions of the incident and were looking into the possibility that other locations, including the Oktoberfest site, were also involved. “It is for this reason that the opening of the festival venue to the public has been postponed,” the police added.
Oktoberfest is the world’s largest folk tradition festival, which this year takes place from the 20th of September to the 5th of October. The festival’s website also says that the event has been suspended until five in the afternoon.
