Former Latvian Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša was approved to the post of Chairperson of Saeima’s Budget and Finance Committee on Thursday, the 27th of February.
She was initially elected to work in the committee. Then members of the committee elected her to as the new head of this committee.
It has already been reported that Čakša, upon returning to the Saeima, expressed a desire to take the position of the head of the Budget and Finance Committee of the Saeima. “As of Thursday [27th of February], I accept the mandate of a member of the Saeima, and the head of the faction has invited me to chair the Budget and Finance Committee,” said Čakša.
She mentioned effective use of funding and continued work on the “Programmā skolā” funding model “from the point of view of attraction of finances”.
The leader of New Unity’s Saeima faction Edmunds Jurēvics told LETA that Čakša was previously in charge of the Budget and Finance Committee between November and December of 2022.
With Čakša back in the Saeima, the previous head of the aforementioned committee – Jānis Reirs – will lose his seat in the parliament.
Čakša served as Minister of Education and Science twice, including the government of then the Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (December 2022 – August 2023).
During her term as minister, Čakša was involved in multiple fights with Latvian Trade Union of Education and Science Employees, which made several requests for her dismissal as minister. Čakša refused to step down each time. She said there was no justified reason to dismiss her.
