Europe’s leaders race to congratulate Trump on his election victory

On Wednesday morning, the 6th of November, when Europe woke up to the news that former US President Donald Trump was on his way to a historic second term in the White House, congratulations poured in from leaders across the continent and allies of the Republican leader, reports Politico.
“The greatest comeback in US political history! Congratulations to President @realDonaldTrump on his enormous victory,” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a long-time Trump ally, wrote on social media. “A much-needed victory for the world!”

“On behalf of myself and the Italian government, I extend my warm congratulations to the newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump,” said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
In a pragmatic statement on social media, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recalled his “excellent meeting” with Trump in September and praised his “commitment to a “peace through strength” approach to global affairs”.

But he added: “We count on continued strong bipartisan US support for Ukraine.”

“Congratulations to President-elect Trump on his historic election victory. I look forward to working with him in the years ahead. As closest allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and entrepreneurship,” congratulated British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also congratulated Donald Trump on his election. “His continued leadership will be crucial to keeping our alliance strong. I look forward to working with him again to advance peace through strength through NATO,” he said in a post on X.
