Next week the European Parliament will discuss the recent news publication regarding Latvian MEP Tatyana Zhdanok’s possible cooperation with Russian Federal Security Service (FSB).
As reported by European Parliament’s press-secretary in Latvia Jānis Krastiņš, the discussion is scheduled for Tuesday, the 6th of February. The vote will take place on Thursday, the 8th of February. It is planned MEPs will discuss Russia’s other attempts to interfere in the European Parliament’s work.
As previously reported, leaked e-mails indicate that Zhdanok has been reporting to members of the Russian Federal Security Service about her activities at least since 2004. E-mails also indicate that she requested funding for various events and activities.
Zhdanok denies cooperating with Russian FSB and calls her contacts old friends, as reported by Baltic investigative journalism centre Re:Baltica. The leaked correspondence was accessed by Russian investigative center The Insider, who then shared this information with Re:Baltica, Estonian portal Delfi and Swedish newspaper Expressen.
Krastiņš notes that this news motivated the EP to start an internal investigation. President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has already submitted this issue to the Advisory Committee on the Code of Conduct.
During debates with Council of Europe and European Commission, MEPs will also look at other attempts by Russia to interfere with EU’s democratic process, as well as possible solutions.
