All of the sanctions that have been imposed on Russia so far should extend to Belarus as well, as should all future sanctions, according to the resolution passed by the European Parliament on Thursday, 19 May.
The European Parliament supports the European Commission’s proposal regarding the sixth package of sanctions against Russia and Belarus and invites EU member states to ensure their quick and comprehensive implementation in the Council of Europe.
The resolution stresses that the crimes [President of Belarus Aleksandr] Lukashenko’s regime has committed against the Belarusian people have to be investigated comprehensively.
European Parliament invites member states to actively apply the universal jurisdiction principle and prepare a lawsuit against Belarusian officials, Lukashenko included, involved in violence and repressions.
The European Parliament also expressed shock over the support Lukashenko’s regime provides to Russia in the war in Ukraine. There is also the issue regarding country’s so-called referendum on restoration of status of a nuclear power and permission to use the territory of Belarus and its airspace to transport troops and arms, refueling activities and storage of munitions.
This is why MEPs note that Belarus is also responsible for the attack on Ukraine, adding that it should take all legal consequences of such actions.
Members of the European Parliament also condemn the recent detainment of trade unions and representatives by Belarusian authorities. MEPs stress it is an attack on human and fundamental rights, which are protected by international conventions. MEP’s demand detainees to be released and provided with access to a fair and independent court.
The European Parliament also condemns Belarus for amending its Criminal Law to include death sentence for attempted acts of terrorism, because, according to MEPs, the regime could potentially abuse it to liquidate political opponents. Additionally, MEPs claim that many political prisoners are already sentenced to long prison sentences in accordance with sections of the law on terrorism.
MEPs also invite Belarus to cancel the death penalty forever.
