The European Union (EU) is postponing the implementation of retaliatory tariffs on imports from the United States for 90 days, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Thursday.
“We want to give negotiations a chance,” said von der Leyen. “If the outcome of the talks is not satisfactory, our countermeasures will take effect,” she emphasized.
On Wednesday, EU member states approved the first round of retaliatory tariffs on US imports, ranging from 10% to 25%, which were scheduled to take effect on Tuesday.
The tariffs approved on Wednesday were intended as a response to US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, which were introduced about a month ago.
However, US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the implementation of increased customs duties would also be postponed for 90 days, setting a base rate of 10% for all countries except China. A 20% tariff had been planned for the EU.
