The European Union (EU) has supplied Ukraine with more than 980 000 artillery shells for its war with Russia and plans to deliver more than one million shells by the end of this year, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday, the 11th of November, reports Reuters.
The EU had initially set a target of delivering one million 155 mm artillery shells by March 2024, but officials later said production capacity was insufficient to meet the target.
“I know that we committed to reaching that level by spring – and we failed. But we can do it by the end of the year,” Borrell told the Ukrainian media European Pravda.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has announced that an additional 500 000 shells will be delivered to Ukraine by the end of the year as part of a separate Prague-led initiative.
Ukraine has also increased domestic defence production to reduce its dependence on allied military aid and ensure timely supplies.
A senior arms official in Kyiv said that Ukraine had increased its production of mortar shells from zero before the Russian invasion to several millions per year.
