Estonians begin online population census

Another ten years have passed and Estonia has launched its population and housing census. The population of the Baltic country is required to fill in and online questionnaire in a month’s time, Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports.
The period for completing the census questionnaire is from Tuesday, December 28, to January 22. In February 2022, census takers from Statistics Estonia will collect data from persons, who will not have done it online and who live at randomly selected addresses. Estonian statisticians will analyse the data and publish it gradually, starting from June.
The first part of the Estonian population and housing census, focused on updating one’s data in the population register, took place in 2021.

The current online questionnaire is available at census.ee after authenticating oneself using an ID-card, Mobile-ID or Smart-ID. Statistics Estonia estimates that it takes around five minutes for a person to complete the questionnaire. In the questionnaire there are only questions, for which there are no answers in Esonia’s national registers. These are, for example, on the knowledge of languages and dialects, religious affiliation and limitations on daily activities due to health issues, ERR reports.
