Estonia has committed to stockpiling in its strategic natural gas reserves a volume equalling 20% of the Baltic nation’s annual natural gas consumption, Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports.
The emergency gas fund, which amounts to 1 TWh of natural gas, is not intended as a permanent replacement for Russian natural gas. This role is planned for liquefied natural gas supplies after a planned terminal at Paldiski is built, connected and operational.

The nation burns around 5 TWh of natural gas per year, with gas of Russian origin currently accounting for 80 percent of the consumption. Some 60 percent of this total usage occurs during the annual heating season, a period from around October to March, ERR reports.
