Devastating floods hit Slovenia; several people dead

Slovenia has been hit by the worst floods in the history of meteorological observations, sweeping away buildings and inundating villages with debris and dirt in its path, writes Reuters.
In about two-thirds of Slovenia, it has been raining heavily for days, and the water has damaged both buildings and bridges. It is estimated that the losses reached 500 million euros. Drago Hudofisk, a resident of Prevalje, near the Austrian border, told Reuters he watched his house being swallowed up by mud over the weekend, adding that the most important thing was that his family had been saved.
The head of the family of eight said everyone knows what it’s like.

Nature is fighting against everything, and water is the force that destroys everything.

Since Friday, the 4th of August, six people have died, including two Dutch citizens.
The Slovenian Environment Agency has informed that on the 7th of August, the floods began to recede, but some areas are still cut off from the outside world. After the water masses broke the dam on the Mura River on the 6th of August, the inhabitants of the surrounding villages were evacuated.

In the ski resort Kranj, the local authorities have warned about the possible inflow of sewage into Sava.

The European Union has offered heavy equipment and engineering units for rescue operations. Slovenia has also asked for support from NATO.
