Latvian Public Media (LSM) currently sees no circumstances that would prompt Latvia to consider withdrawing from the Eurovision Song Contest, said Raina Anna Ločmele, Head of Corporate Communications at LSM.
This month, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, and Iceland informed the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) that they would not participate in the contest, announcing their decision after organisers had decided to allow Israel to take part.
LSM, however, emphasises two key considerations: first, unity among EBU member broadcasters, and second, the importance of the Eurovision Song Contest for Latvian artists. “We are aware that the entire Eurovision process — from Latvia’s national selection Supernova to the semi-finals and the final — is extremely important for Latvian artists,” Ločmele said.
Taking these considerations into account and “carefully weighing other factors,”
LSM currently sees no reason to consider withdrawing from the competition.
As previously reported, the EBU held a General Assembly meeting in early December to discuss concerns over Israel’s participation.
In response to allegations that Israel had manipulated voting in favour of its entries, EBU members voted to introduce stricter voting rules for the contest but took no steps to exclude any broadcaster from Eurovision.
The final list of participating countries will be published before Christmas, the EBU confirmed.
