Denmark strengthens Ministry of Defence in government reshuffle

On Tuesday, the 22nd of August, the Danish government disclosed a shift in which Troels Lund Poulsen, the Economy Minister, will assume the role of Defence Minister, as the NATO member enters a period of substantial military expenditure, reports Reuters.
Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, resuming as Minister for Economic Affairs on the 1st of August, after a stress-related six-month absence from the Ministry of Defence, will now assume the role of Minister for Economic Affairs. During Ellemann-Jensen’s leave,

Poulsen, who acted as defence minister, led negotiations for a framework agreement raising NATO military spending and managed donations, including F-16 fighter jets, to Ukraine.

Political commentator Jarl Cordua has said that this is a logical step. The intricate defence agreement

requires a knowledgeable individual with established trust among coalition parties, a role Troels Lund Poulsen is well-prepared for, Cordua stated.

Despite challenges in overseeing the acquisition of artillery weapons from Israel in January, Elleman-Jensen will continue as deputy prime minister.
This month, he dismissed the permanent secretary of state in the defence ministry and issued an apology for misleading parliament.
