Decline in birth rate and increase in marriages – latest data on Latvia’s population

In the first six months of this year, 5,660 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 13.2% or 863 fewer than in the same period of 2024, according to data published by the Central Statistical Bureau.

The highest number of births was recorded in May – 985 babies – and the lowest in February – 881.

In the first half of this year, 13,077 deaths were registered, which is 4.8% or 661 fewer than in the first half of last year. Deaths exceeded last year’s figures only in April and May – by four more in each month – while in all other months mortality was lower than a year ago.

During the first half of 2025, 4,137 marriages were registered, an increase of 23.9% or 797 marriages compared to the same period last year. The highest number of marriages was in June – 1,132 – which is 16.5% or 160 more than in June 2024, and the lowest in January – 466 marriages.

As of the 1st of July this year, Latvia’s provisional population was 1.83 million.
