Death toll in collapsed Dominican nightclub exceeds 180

In the Dominican Republic, the death toll following the collapse of a nightclub roof has reached 184 people, rescue workers announced on Wednesday.

As reported earlier, the roof of the “Jet Set” nightclub in Santo Domingo collapsed during the night leading into Tuesday.

More than 300 rescuers, aided by search dogs, spent two days combing through the rubble. Firefighters from Puerto Rico and Israel also assisted in the search.

On Wednesday, rescuers announced that the search for survivors has been concluded.

More than 500 people sustained injuries in the tragedy.

Among the victims is merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who was performing at the time of the collapse. Local media report that between 500 and 1,000 people were inside the club.

Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi province, also lost her life in the incident.

Former baseball player Tony Blanco, who spent nine years playing in the United States and eight years in Japan, is also among the deceased.

The cause of the roof collapse has not yet been determined.

Dominican President Luis Abinader has declared three days of national mourning.
